How to backup your Grand Theft Auto IV saved games

Grand Theft Auto IV

If you search over the internet,  you’ll find a lot of different solutions to backup your GTA IV saved games. In my occasion (transfer from Windows XP 32-bit to Windows Vista 64-bit) the following worked perfectly:

  • Backup the entire “Rockstar Games” folder (your saved games) which is located in C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\ for Windows Vista and in C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\ for Windows XP.
  • Backup the “XLive” folder (your Microsoft Games for Windows – LIVE profile), located in C:\Users\<USERNAME>\AppData\Local\Microsoft (Windows Vista) or C:\Documents and Settings\<USERNAME>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\
  • Install the game (including Microsoft Games for Windows – LIVE) and run it (so it can create the folders).
  • Find the new folders and replace them with your own.

Enjoy!

  2. Its a little different if you are using Vista Ultimate…
    Go Here instead…
    C:\Users\>\Documents\Rockstar Games

Copy the GTA-IV folder over, and voila!

  6. i just built a new pc, and i’m soon going to try this for win7-64 to win7-64. hope it works… it must work…

  7. I did it with Win-XP 64 to Win-XP 64 (reinstall) and it works for sure.

  8. It works, but I must go through intro then Load the game. Is there a fix to this?

  9. Hot damn, it works. I transfered from my Desktop (Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit) to my Laptop (Windows Vista Home 64 bit) This was a test because my desktop is f’d up and I must reinstall the OS and i am just upgrading to Windows 7. The second time I loaded the game it loaded the updated game fine. No problem. Thank you for this. And for all of those who think transferring your game is hard, it is not. I have the Online GTA Live account BTW.

  10. None of these solutions work for me. I reinstaled my windows 7 and i copied the xlive folder and the rockstar folder but still does not work. Does it have something to do with me having an offline windows account?
